2017 Tourists Opening Day Roster Released

Rockies Assign Youth, Speed, and Toughness to Asheville

ASHEVILLE-- The 2017 Asheville Tourists Opening Day Roster is official. The Colorado Rockies assigned 26 players and six coaches to represent the city of Asheville in the South Atlantic League this season. The Tourists open on the road Thursday, April 6, in Hagerstown, MD and welcome the Greenville Drive on Thursday, April 13, at 7:05pm for the 2017 home opener.

Headlining the roster are two Colorado Rockies first round draft picks. Pitcher Riley Pint, selected 4th overall in the 2016 draft, pitched last year in the Pioneer League. Pint is ranked by MLB.com as the Rockies third highest rated prospect. The right-hander's fastball has been clocked as high as 102mph. Infielder Tyler Nevin, the 38th overall selection in the 2015 draft, will have his first opportunity on a full-season roster. Nevin will break camp with the Tourists after battling through an injury plagued 2016 season.

In addition, infielders Colton Welker (4th Round), Max George (6th Round), pitcher Reid Humphreys (7th Round), and outfielders Willie Abreu (6th Round), Cole Anderson (10th Round), and Vince Fernandez (10th Round) all join the Tourists as players selected in the top ten rounds of the draft.

The Tourists showcase a strong group of international players including pitchers Julian Fernandez and Antonio Santos; catchers Joel Diaz and Robbie Perkins; and position players Jose Gomez and Manuel Melendez. Bryan Baker, Ty Culbreth,  Erick Julio, and Alejandro Requena all bring starting pitching experience to Asheville and are expected to join Pint and Santos in the rotation. The projected bullpen boasts players such as Matt Dennis, Brandon Gold, J.D. Hammer, Justin Lawrence, and Kenny Oakley; all of whom posted tremendous numbers in short-season action last year.

Two additional infielders are expected to bring grit, toughness, and power to Asheville's lineup. First Baseman Jacob Bosiokovic led the Northwest League in doubles last year and was named a midseason and postseason All-Star. Taylor Snyder hit a Grand Junction high seven Home Runs in 47 games last season. The two also combined to steal 24 bases.

The 2017 Asheville Tourists features players from the United States, Dominican Republic, Venezuela, Colombia, and Australia. The roster make-up includes 13 pitchers, four outfielders, six infielders, and three catchers.

The six coaches, are Manager Warren Schaeffer (3rd season), Hitting Coach Norberto 'Paco' Martin (1st season), Pitching Coach Ryan Kibler (1st season), Development Supervisor Marv Foley (5th season), Athletic Therapist Casey Papas (3rd season), and Strength & Conditioning Coach Zac Ruch (1st season).
